Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners rent a bicycle or e-bike in Korea?
Only some rental companies accept applications from foreigners. Products that accept them carry an 'Open to foreign applicants' label on the product page; products without that label are currently difficult for foreigners to apply for. Approval is decided by the rental company and confirmed during consultation. Korean nationals can apply for every product. You apply in your own language, and SETKORA arranges the Korean-language contract with the rental company.
Why rent by the month when Ttareungi and other public bikes exist?
They answer different questions. Public bikes are cheap for occasional trips and you never have to store one — a real advantage in a Korean one-room, where your own bike ends up in the entryway, on a shared rack, or carried up the stairs of a walk-up villa with no lift (which is why folding frames are popular). A monthly rental suits the person who makes the same trip every day: no hunting for a dock, your saddle height and phone mount stay exactly as you set them, and you can choose an e-bike, which public fleets almost never offer.
Do I need a licence to ride an electric bike in Korea?
It depends on the type. Pedal-assist (PAS) models, where the motor cuts out at around 25 km/h and the weight stays under the legal limit, are treated as bicycles and may use bike lanes and riverside paths; throttle-driven models fall into a motorised category that requires a licence. A helmet is legally required either way. Check which type a listing is before you apply, and confirm it during consultation.
What if I move house or leave Korea before the term ends?
Moving within Korea is normally just an address change you report to the rental company. Ending early is the part to plan for: the contract length and any early-termination charge are set by each rental company, and SETKORA is not the contracting party. If your departure date is already fixed, raise it during consultation before you sign rather than after.
Rental, subscription, lease — what is the difference?
Mostly the name. You pay a monthly fee to use the appliance, and when the contract term ends you either keep it or return it. Korean brands label the same structure 'rental', 'subscription' or 'membership'. What actually differs is the contract length, the monthly fee and whether installation is included — that varies by product and is confirmed during consultation.
How long is the contract, and what if I cancel early?
Most items listed here run on a 60-month contract; some are 36, 48 or 72 months. Cancelling early can trigger a settlement for the remaining term, and the amount and method follow the rental company's own terms.
